Description

Sungate is a beautiful family holiday home in the historic city of Bath. Sungate is located in a quiet residential area, close enough to the city centre to be accessible but without being noisy or busy. Tamsin and David, the owners at Sungate, have lovingly adapted the property to meet the needs of both children and adults on the autism spectrum, their families and carers. Sungate has many autism friendly features to meet a range of sensory, vestibular, proprioceptive and safety needs, a few of which are listed below and you can see a full list of all autism friendly features here. Sungate is a 3 bed bungalow that sleeps up to 5 people and includes lots of additional extras to make your holiday a successful and happy one! Tamsin and David have lived experience of autism and understand the difficulties parents can face when taking their child on holiday. They have put so much thought and care in to the holiday home to help make holidays easier for autistic people, from the colour changing fireplace, sensory area, hidden wires, and magnet locks on kitchen cupboards, to the safe place bed, underfloor heating, egg chair and laser projector and much more!

Follow the path, lit up at night, round to the back of the house, and you will find the Sensory Courtyard, a small secluded area which can be locked if need be. The courtyard is enclosed and families can relax and enjoy the range of sensory features it has to offer, including a 3 seater canopy swing, wind chimes and water feature!

Things to do

Bath City Farm
The Fram is a short walk from Sungate and is set in 37 acres of land. It has breath-taking views of Bath, a play area, and a range of animals to see. The farm is free to visit and there’s also an inviting cafe. The Farm is autism friendly and holds a range of inclusive events and activities such as meet the animals sessions and free guided walks. There’s parking on site and an accessible toilet.

Sydney Gardens

Situated by Bath’s Holburne Museum and café and has beautiful walks, Georgian buildings and a new large play area. The new play park, which opened just last year, boasts extra high swings, wooden climbing frames, basketball hoops and a fort. There is also a water fountain for you to fill your bottles, a nearby Changing Places toilet, and some more secluded areas if it gets busy. Sydney Gardens is somewhere the family can stay all day when the weather’s nice, with Bath city centre only a short distance away too.

Victoria Park:

Victoria Park is a fun packed play park with free admission, close to the city centre. Plenty to do for all ages, and across the autism spectrum. There are swings, slides, climbing frames, zip wires, a skate boarding area, plus a small cafe on site and open spaces to walk nearby. There are also nearby botanical gardens, plus a bandstand, crazy golf and tennis courts at the Royal Pavillion. The Royal Pavillion Cafe situated further down from Victoria park (not far from the stunning Royal Cresent, found in many feature films) has outdoor and upstairs seating where you can sit and watch people play tennis, or the ice skating at Christmas. Parking is nearby also, including disabled spaces. It’s worth bearing in mind that the main park can get very busy at peak times. There are accessible toilets on site.

If you need some time out and a change of scenery from the park, cross over the Main Street and head down Midland Road directly opposite, towards Avon Walkway. This is a peaceful canal walk, with Coffee No 1 cafe, a grassy spot to sit and a fun outdoor gym along the Riverside Complex.

Rainbow Woods:

The Rainbow woods are secluded and calming with a bit of magic thrown in! Part of the Bath Family Discovery trail, they are well worth a visit. Once there, enjoy a picnic in a shady spot, make a woodland den, or count the hidden fairy doors! Lovely to visit in all weathers, we often take the dog here.

The Roman Baths

Once the site of one of the great religious spas of the ancient world; the people of Roman Britain came to the site to worship the goddess Sulis Minerva and bathe in the waters of the natural thermal springs, which still flow with hot water today. Today visitors can explore the Roman Baths complex, walk on the original Roman pavements and see the ruins of the Temple of Sulis Minerva. The museum collection, located next to the bathing complex, includes a gilt bronze head of the Goddess Sulis Minerva, and other Roman artefacts.

Avon Valley Adventure Park:

If you fancy a day trip out of Bath, Avon Valley Park is a fun place to go, approximately 20 minutes drive from Sungate. With animal adventures, Dinosaur Valley, a miniature railway, a play park and lots more, there is plenty to suit everyone. Staff are friendly and there is space to sit in quieter areas if you want some peace and quiet, as it can get busy in peak times. You can book online and there’s enough to do for the whole day. Registered carers get a reduced ticket price and children go free throughout the summer holidays!

Shopping

There is a Co-Op a few minutes away and shopping can be delivered to Sungate from most supermarkets. More information in laces to eat and local shops will be sent to you in the digital guidebook

The recently built Southgate centre in Bath has a range of shops and places to eat, whilst Milsom street has shops found in a more traditional setting.

Things You May Need to Know

Sungate is located in a residential area and has neighbours to one side and we ask that families are mindful of noise when entering and exiting the holiday home. There is soundproofing on the adjoining wall to help reduce noise transfer and the single room with en-suite shower/wet room, as well as the lounge and kitchen, are all on the other side of the house.

There is a driveway outside of Sungate which leads to a main road.

Windows have integrated (found within the frame) window restrictors, except for the single room which has a restrictor that requires a key.

There is a small water fountain in the Sensory Courtyard to the rear of the holiday home which is operated from a switch in the main bedroom. There are also wind chimes (Can be removed and replaced with a bird feeder) in the outdoor space.

Check in is strictly between 3pm-7pm

The dining room doors have keys, the utility room has a key and the doors separating the lounge from the kitchen have keys. The bathroom and shower/wet room have turn locks and the bedrooms do not have locks.

The Sensory Courtyard is enclosed. The front outside area of Sungate is partially enclosed and adults will need to supervise their children at all times

The Safe place bed is available on request and can be removed if necessary.

For security, Sungate has cameras outside – to the front and side of the property. For GDPR compliancy, Sungate is registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Sungate allows up to 2 well behaved, toilet trained dogs at Sungate (no other pets, sorry) for an additional charge. Sungate is set in a partially enclosed area. This means that your dog(s) should be supervised at all times. Please let us know when you are booking if you intend to bring your pet. Please see the Pet Terms and conditions here.
